what is a good first thomas train set?
Posted on 25. May, 2010 by Toy Expert in Deluxe train set
I am buying a train table and train for my son’s 2nd birthday and am confused on what to buy for his first set up. I would like to buy the deluxe roundhouse, sight n sound fire station, qaury tunnel. Is this too much for a first set? What other track accessories would be needed? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
first of all it is a great idea and a way to teach him history.
the steam set is a good one. adding color and lights at his age will hold his attention longer. you can use it around the Christmas tree until he is about 5 and then set it up on a board in the garage and raise and lower it with pulleys. a 4 X 8 sheet of plywood is needed and two adjustable saw horses for a stand base.
have fun.

With a youngster the rule of thumb is, start simple and then gradually build up.
You can get Hornby ‘Thomas’ sets with oval of track, loco, carriages and transformer but for one so young, it’s probably better to start with a push-along set like ‘Take-Along Thomas’. This has track, locos, carriages, accessories etc. but is non-powered and designed for very young children to push along by hand.
When he is a bit older you could then introduce him to the electric train set.
