How to toilet train baby rats?

Posted on 02. Sep, 2010 by Toy Expert in Deluxe train set

I have 2 baby rats coming home soon. Have a huge 4 level cage for them and would like advice on its set up and also how to toilet train them for one area (Ive heard rats can do this)
I was thinking a toilet area somewhere on ground level (should I put something in specifically for this?) A wheel and toys 1st level, food and toys next level and bed on top?
Any advice appreciated

Get a small litter box and place one on several of the floors. Some rats will just automatically use the litter box with no additional help from you. But if you are not that lucky (and I hope you are!) you can try to place some of their dirty litter and a few poops in the litter box to lead them to where you want them to go. Just keep in mind rats will usually poop in their litter box but it is almost impossible to train them to pee in it.. Here is a link to a site that might give you more ideas on he best way to potty train your babies… http://www.rattyrat.com/guidebook/littertraining.html … Just don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t work. Not all rats will use a litter box, like everything else it all depends on their personality! Good luck I hope this works for you!

You can buy special small animal litter boxes that attach to the walls of the cage. It doesn’t matter how the cage is set up, the rats will re-arrange it however they want :P Be sure to change the setup frequently so they don’t get bored. I’d put a bed, box, or hammock on each level. Rats usually chose a special spot to sleep the first time they are in a cage, be it a box or hammock, or even the food dish! With a large cage, also keep multiple water bottles so they remember to drink.
