A toy car that is safe for a toddler to sleep with?

He has decided he wants to sleep with a toy car, and tonight (he turned 19 months today) was even crying and saying "car car car" when I put him in bed until I handed him a matchbox car.
Problem is most of our toy cars say "not for kids under 3" so I worry about him having it in his crib. Any ideas on toy cars that would be safer? And what is the hazard with matchbox cars… the wheels seem too small to choke on, and I really don’t think he would try to swallow the whole car. He usually doesn’t put them in his mouth, he just likes to hold it and pretend to make it go.
I thought about a car shaped pillow, but he won’t even take a wooden Thomas train in place of a metal car.

I always let mine take them up to the bedroom and put them on the dresser. So it was in the room with him and he could know were it is and get it when he woke. He was fine with that.

That seems like that could be rather dangerous. They do make slightly larger non metal toy cars that are safe for children under 3 I believe but I’m not quite sure where they sell them.

If a small piece broke off, he could swallow it and choke, youd be surprised how small of an object it takes to choke a toddler, and that one time that he does decide to put the car in his mouth is the one time that he could choke. I would either find something thats all in one piece, so no parts can come off, or lay down the law and tell him no, no cars in the crib (most likely the option I would choose), just tell him no, toys dont go in the crib, and leave it at that, yes he may whine and cry, but tantrums dont get us our way, he will get over it once he sees that its not going to happen.

Just let him fall asleep with the car then take it out of his cot when he’s sleeping
